Keener body surfers than me

This guy - Gordon Hempton - is a second or third cousin.

He is also a Grammy award winner for his nature sound recordings - but otherwise makes a living recording sounds for computer games.  You have almost certainly heard his recordings in some Microsoft game or other...

I went to visit him outside Seattle and he looks like me too.

Anyway - I am a keen body surfer.  But not as keen as this.  When you have to clear the snow in front of your van to take you to the beach you know that you will not be rescuing a hapless Japanese tourist.

  1. Impressive in a crazy sort of way.

I grew up in San Diego (Pacific Beach) and live in Seattle now. A friend of mine is a surfer here - I shake my head in disbelief every time I hear about him going out. His theory is that if you're warmer in the water (around 40F) than the air, you should be in the water.

  2. Your cousin seems like a nice guy. But real women (tm) have fun without a wetsuit in colder waters:

  3. I got in a morning session at salt creek on the olympic penninsula (nearby seattle). it was aight. JM, most everyone wears a wetsuit 5/4 or even 6/5/4 thickness. the cold isn't too bad.

  4. I'm a regular reader of your blog and even though I've been living overseas for the past 15 years, I felt homesick when I saw this video. I grew up on the Olympic Peninsula and am the same age as your cousin. 40 years ago we swam those beach waves so it's heartwarming to see that it still looks like I remember. Not a lot of fast-paced change out there, thank God. Good for him....
